You might have started your cutting project with the help of a chainsaw. But there may be some cases where you are stuck with the starting issue of it. If you ignore the manual of your chainsaw, then it isn’t easy to know about the saw properly. Always keep the manual with you while working. This will help you to avoid unnecessary issues.
In this article, we will try to help on how to start a chainsaw properly. There are many types of chainsaw. But here, we are sequentially putting the standard steps. Try to follow them along with your chainsaw manual. You can also refer to some good online tutorials to have a better overview.
How To Start A Chainsaw- Step By Step Guide
Total Time : 1 Hour
1. Reading The Chainsaw Manual
This step is crucial before you start using your chainsaw. If you are working with the chainsaw first time, then you cannot avoid this step. You should read all the instructions provided in the manual. Even if you know the proper procedure of using it, you should read the manual once. For every different type, there are special instructions provided. You cannot apply your same procedure for all kinds of chainsaw. You may not know all the various operations for different types of chainsaw.
Step 2: Stable Mode Of Chainsaw
You should start the chainsaw, preferably on level ground. Never proceed with this process in the air or on a high surface. Now, you should use the left leg to manage its handle. Now, press the handle down firmly to preserve the chainsaw. You can use your left hand for this case.
Make sure that no other material is in contact with the chainsaw guide. The chain and guide should be in a different position.
Always wear protective glasses while doing all these steps. Never neglect your safety while working. It can liberate many dust particles.
Step 3: Chain Brake In Engage-Mode
Push the chain brake handle forward using your wrist. You can use the support of your left hand for this. You should be able to draw the brake in engage mode in this way. It prevents the chain from any unwanted spinning during the starting process. This will provide a smooth running of the saw.
Step 4: Turning On The Chainsaw
Here, after engaging the chain break, you need to press the on button on the chainsaw. Now, you can open up the saw choke. You can use a cold start for this step. After this, the choke regulates the fuel and air mixture. You will find this mixture running into the saw through its engine.
Step 5: Priming The Fuel
For the priming of fuel, you need to press the fuel primer bulb. Do this for more than three times. The bulb should stiffen, and you should be able to see fuel in it. The primer bulb draws the fuel tank. It also uses the carburetor to draw the fuel into it.
Step 6: Pulling Off The Starting Cord Or Rope
Using your left hand on the top handle and right foot in the rear handle, pull the cord. Pull the cord with a smooth move and quick motion. It shouldn’t be very fast, though. We mean that the motion should not be too slow. You should be able to hear the engine sound.
Step 7: Disengage Mode Of Choke
This step is significant. If you feel that the saw is not starting chainsaw correctly, then follow this step. You should never force the engine to start. There may be some issues in it. You need to rectify them. You can do this by putting the choke in disengage mode. Give it sufficient idle time. If this is not happening, then you need to pull up the cord more times.
Step 8: Idle Chainsaw
This step is also essential for starting the chainsaw with full efficiency. Don’t try to rush while doing it. You need to give adequate time for the starting of your chainsaw. Any device needs sufficient time to start itself. Otherwise, it will not work correctly and will hang in between.
Allow the chainsaw with its idle time. When you read its manual, you can see its required idle time. If it is not mentioned, then you can use 30 seconds for it. That should be enough for it. If you do not use this idle time, then the chain could stall out.
Step 9: Closing The Choke
You should not forget this step. Never try to skip this skip. You should close the choke properly. After the 30 seconds duration of idle time, close the choke. You can do this by moving the choke lever to the closed position. After you do this, the chainsaw will remain in the starting position. So, do not worry about that.
Step 10: Chain Brake In Non-Engage Mode
Use your right hand while doing this step. Using your hand, try to pull the thread back. If you do not do so, then the chain will not spin appropriately after starting the chainsw. And then, you won’t be able to start cutting even after starting your chainsaw.
Step 11: Lifting The Chainsaw Up
Keep the chainsaw in your hands with a proper grip. Hold it firmly using both your hands. Now, to start sawing or to start cutting, you need to pull the throttle. Use your two fingers for this task. Preferably, use the index and middle finger. They will provide the best result. You should use your right hand in this case.
Now, you can start cutting your workpiece quickly. You have started your saw correctly.
Starting The Chainsaw When It Is Warm
If you feel that your chainsaw is warm and you have to start it, then use the following steps to do that. If you are taking a short break from using it and again you have to use it, then you will find that the chainsaw is warm. You should apply the normal procedure here to start chainsaw again. You can avoid many steps here because it has already been started once.
Let’s see the operating process of a warm chainsaw:
- First, place the chainsaw on the ground or any flat surface.
- After this, turn on the chainsaw. The button should be in on position.
- Now, after switching it on, hold the top handle of the saw with your left hand. Make a proper grip with your hand.
- Now, try to keep the brake in engaging mode. You can use your hand in this task.
- After this, you should pull the starting rope many times. Around 2 to 3 times pull the rope. Do this by using your right hand. You should do this until the engine starts.
- After this, the engine will get started. Hold the chainsaw with a proper grip. Hold it using both of your hands; it should be around your waist level.
- Now, you can proceed to pull the throttle to start the cutting process.
Some Issues That May Occur When Starting The Chainsaw
1. Drop Start Case
A drop start is when you hold your chainsaw with one hand and pull the rope with the other hand. The starter rope is not much stable. There is a high risk of any injury by pulling the rope.
2. Rappig Up Of Starter Rope Around Your Hand
When you hold the chainsaw, then always hold the starter rope handle with your one hand. Don’t wrap the rope around your hand. Never hold the rope directly. If you do so, then you may not start the cutting process with ease. It will be difficult for you to handle the chainsaw in that case.
3. Stacking Up Of The Bar
When you start using the chainsaw, then make sure that the bar is not stuck in any wood. If you are not attentive about this, then you may cause the kickback condition. That can be fatal for you as the device will hit back. So, prevent the stacking of the bar with any wood.
4. Snapping Back Of Starter Rope
Never allow the rope to snap in the back. If the rope snaps back, then the mechanism of the tool will become complicated. You won’t be able to start the device with ease. Always take care of the starter rope while working. This thing will ruin your process if not taken care of.
1. What is happening wrong? Initially, the chainsaw is getting started and then stops.
There can be many reasons for that. This is generally due to fuel and storage problems. After some time, the fuel turns into a stale. If you have stored it along with gasoline, then the system becomes restricted. These issues do not come with any warranty.
2. Which type of maintenance should I use for my chainsaw?
There are three types in this. You should do daily, weekly and monthly maintenance if possible. This will help you to ensure the proper working of the chainsaw. If any issue arises, then you can easily rectify it.
3. In which condition should I change the chain of my chainsaw?
You should change the chain in three cases if the drive links do not fit into the workpiece also if any of the cutting teeth or links are broken. If you have sharpened the chain over 2/3rd the length, then again you should replace the chain.
4. Why is the cutting process happening only for one side?
This is due to the dull cutters. If you have not sharpened your chain correctly, then it is difficult to cut the challenging piece. You should also take care of different gauge settings. A worn guide bar also prevents the proper cutting of the bar.
5. How can we do the lubrication of the chain?
Chainsaws are self-lubricating. But still, you can use a universal chain oil to lubricate it. This oil is specifically designed to retain a proper viscosity at different temperatures. If the bar is fitted with a roller, then you should lubricate this also.
To use any device which is new to you, you should have a good guide. It is better if you are familiar with its manual. It will help you to understand the working of the tool to a great extent because you are working with a cutting tool and hard substances.
